Adrian Lyne’s classic thriller Fatal Attraction garnered six Academy Award nominations and a time-tested spot among an entire generation’s pop cultural canon. Production on the film, however, afforded its stars a handful of memories — particularly in relation to one of the film’s steamiest moments. Speaking to on an episode of EW Reunites on PEN, the PEOPLE/Entertainment Weekly Network, Glenn Close and Michael Douglas reveal the quirks that went into a key sex scene in the movie, which sees the pair getting down atop various kitchen surfaces before moving into the bedroom. “Sex in movies is always a delicate line. Glenn was raring to go,” Douglas, whose family man character, Dan, has an affair with Close’s publishing company editor, Alex, reveals. “We got up there on the kitchen table, and she came up with this great idea with the sink, with the water running and making herself wet, which is always good.” He wasn’t about to let his costar outdo him on the improvisational front, however. “The only thing I threw in, I remember, was this moment where we were going at it,  I like comic relief, I think you need a second , and there’s a second where I had my pants down carrying Glenn, then tripping, and then having to make this run for the bed,” he continues. “It kind of let the audience relax for a second.” Close, a six-time Oscar nominee, says she admires the scene for its playful authenticity. “I like it because it’s not terribly romantic,” she adds. “It’s very real and kind of desperate and funny.” See Douglas and Close discuss the making of Fatal Attraction‘s sex scenes above and watch the full episode of EW Reunites: Fatal Attraction, streaming now on People/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN). Girls, which wrapped up its sixth and final season Sunday night, arrived on the scene in 2012 with a bang—if you can use that word to describe what Adam and Hannah did together on that dingy Brooklyn couch. From that cringingly unromantic encounter through the dozens of awkward hookups and one infamous rim job that followed, this show pioneered a certain kind of naturalistic, unsexy millennial sex scene. So to send off this show in the manner it so richly deserves, we’ve ranked every sex scene on the show according to how Girls it was. You’re welcome.

This was, in my opinion, a brilliant scene in so many ways. I like how understatedly it’s played, more for humor than shock value. It has a nonchalant, NBD quality to it — like, who doesn’t get their ass eaten in the kitchen at midday? — and continues with “Girls’”‘ commitment to reveling in the unglamorous awkwardness of sex in general, while breaking down taboos by showcasing sex acts that go against traditional heteronormative depictions of coupling (although, as Gawker said recently, we are apparently in the midst of a “booty eating renaissance“).

This scene, along with others from this season, also bolsters an opinion I have long held, which is that Williams has some of the best comic timing on the show. The exchange between Desi and Marni as he emerges from her butt and says “I love that,” and she says “I love you too” is nothing short of genius. I don’t really get why people hate Marnie. Her cringeworthy shamelessness as she forces herself time and time again into outlandish and awkward situations is what makes her one of my favorite characters, and Vulture’s interview with Williams shows what a great attitude she had about filming the whole thing. (What with “Peter Pan Live!” and “Girls,” Williams has surely burnished her reputation as one of the best sports in the biz.)

It was necessary to draw up some parameters to make this highly intensive, very scientific project feasible, so before we begin, a few notes on methodology: This list is limited to acts or attempted acts of manual stimulation and vaginal, oral, and anal sex. This means several makeouts, some of which included generous second-base action, did not make the cut. Apologies to the time Shoshanna made out with a doorman and Marnie, Jessa, and Thomas John’s almost-threesome.

Welcome back, “Girls!” Last night, while the rest of us were slogging through the Golden Globes over on NBC, some pretty risqué stuff was happening over in the thorny wilderness that is premium cable. Namely, the return of Lena Dunham and co., who brought with them one of the show’s most unorthodox sex scenes thus far: In which Marnie gets butt-motorboated by her new love interest and musical partner, Desi.
