Home > Blog > Wild Bird Care > Tips for Proper Bird Seed Storage Tips for Proper Bird Seed Storage Posted on June 2, 2016 by Lauren Piek Learn how to properly store bird seed with the help of Blain’s Farm & Fleet. You may not realize it, but properly storing your bags of bird seed is almost as important as initially selecting the right seed to use. You want to make sure the seed you buy is stored safely so it’s always ready to use when your feathered friends are hungry. Don & Lillian Stokes of Stokes Select share a few tips on bird seed storage. When it comes to bird seed, storing it properly is just as important as choosing the right bird seed. Follow these five tips on proper bird seed storage from Stokes Select and Blain’s Farm & Fleet. 5 Tips for Proper Bird Seed Storage: 1. Buy fresh bird seed. Make sure you buy fresh seed in the first place. Examine the seed, if possible, in the store for any signs of mold, insects, etc. Often the seed comes fresh from the manufacturer, but is subject to deterioration or insects, because the retail store may have improperly stored their bird seed. 2. Choose the right containers. Seed should be stored in clean and dry containers. How much seed you buy will determine the size of container and choice of container you need. Plastic containers with lids are a great storage option. You can even adapt storage containers designed for other purposes, such as aluminum or plastic trash cans. Taking advantage of seed sales, which usually require buying larger quantities of seed, is only a good idea if you get some good, large storage containers. 3. Store seed in the right place. Seed should be stored in a cool and dry place. This is essential to preserve freshness. Store it in cooler areas of your house, if possible. Store outside only if it is cooler weather and make sure it is not in a location where animals can get into it. Make sure the container has a tight-fitting lid and that animals cannot chew into the container. If possible place bird seed containers in locations that are handy for you to access. Proper storage will save you money and protect your investment, as you will not have to throw out seed because it has deteriorated or gone bad. 4. Make it easy to fill your feeders. Get a good scoop, such as pitcher, measuring cup, etc., and put it in your seed containers to make getting seed out of the container easier. Use these for filling feeders. Depending on where your seed and feeders are located, you may carry your feeders inside and fill them from the large container, or fill smaller containers, such as juice pitchers, with seed from the larger containers and carry it outside and fill feeders there. 5. Keep feeders filled with fresh bird seed. Check bird seed in your containers often to make sure it is remaining fresh. It’s important to keep feeders filled with the fresh seed if you want to attract the maximum number of birds. Birds, like finches, often will not come to seed such as thistle (Nyjer) that is old or has gone rancid. Discard any moldy, deteriorated or insect infested seed. Offer a variety of feeders and fresh foods in clean feeders and you will attract the maximum number of birds. For more tips on keeping your feathered friends happy, visit our Wild Bird Care blog.
