Colonie Police say the hidden camera was inside the bathroom for about 25 minutes before it was discovered around 7:30 p.m. on March 18th. It was disguised as an everyday device. “I don't know that anyone would have even realized this, it's so innocuous and so part of our daily lives, these USB chargers,” said Lieutenant Bob Winn of the Colonie Police Department. “In this case, the employee did notice that it was odd, thinking somebody may have left it behind.” “When she further examined that, she discovered it was in fact a hidden camera,” Winn added. Police say three people were filmed by the camera. They’ve notified all three. Winn says they were all cooperative but don’t know who could have put the camera in the bathroom. Police say because they recovered the camera, there’s no chance of the footage getting out to the public. On Wednesday, Colonie Police released pictures of the man they believe put the camera in the bathroom. “He is captured on the store surveillance footage hanging around that bathroom shortly before that camera was placed, and he's not seen again after that,” said Winn. Police say they’re releasing the man’s picture now because it took them a while to get the security footage from Starbucks, and then they ran the pictures through facial recognition software and didn’t get a match. Colonie Police say this type of case is not a new one to them. “In the last seven or so years we’ve investigated about six of these in the Town of Colonie,” said Winn. Police say the incident shouldn’t stop people from using public bathrooms, but are encouraging people to always be aware of their surroundings. “Just maybe take that extra second,” said Winn. “Go ahead, live your life like you're supposed to but take that extra second in places that perhaps your privacy could be compromised.” Customers say the entire thing will make them more careful the next time they use a public restroom. “I never thought to look for cameras, in all honesty, I never thought to look for cameras,” said Helene. “But now I will.” Colonie Police are asking anyone with information on who the man might be to give them a call at 518-783-2744.
